Just like physical health everyone has mental health too! (it isn’t just those who have been diagnosed with a mental illness or disease).
WHO (the world health organisation) defines mental health as:
“a state of well-being in which every individual realises his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community.” W.H.O.
Being mentally well isn’t about not experiencing negative emotions its about being able to experience all the ups and downs life throws your way in a psychologically and emotionally healthy way.
So just as you brush your teeth to prevent decay there are things you can do to make sure you are mentally equipped to cope with the lemons life throws at you! Because sometimes it isn’t as easy as making lemonade.
The Checklist
Look After Your Body and Mind
eat your veggies, drink plenty of water and make sure you get enough ZZZ’s
Exercise Regularly
Getting even 10 minutes of exercise a day will help ease stress, reduce anxiety and increase relaxation. Go for a walk, do a 10 push ups, drop 10 squats or lunges in the office by the end of the week you can claim you’ve done 50 push ups/squats/lunges which is better then none!
Get Amongst Nature
Taking the time to remove yourself from the hustle and bustle can have dramatic effect on your mind. Being in nature is an opportunity to leave the rat race and allow your mind to process more efficiently by reducing the input bombardment!
Stop and Breathe
Just breathe. Focussing on just breathing removes all unnecessary distractions from your mind - this is an easy way to reduce stress.
Put Yourself First
Remember that self-care isn’t selfish. Take the time to do something nice for yourself. Treat yourself to a movie, listen to your favourite song, enjoy a hot bath —whatever helps you relax, re-charge and flourish.
Get Help When Needed
its important to know there are professionals and resources to assist you if your mental strength isn’t on point. Its ok to have a bad day or 3 but I you are in a funk that you just cant shake or you really aren’t feeling yourself then it worth having a chat with a professional
